As for the "alienation", Detroit's history is what has set the indifference in people's minds to give the foreign outlook on the city tainting the fact that it is more today than what people have made it out to be. I guess a good word would be close-minded. Which more times then not, I fall victim to as well. I'm just trying to make light of that. Plus I think E.T. was open to new things...
